Brief communication: Application of a muonic cosmic ray snow gauge to monitor the snow water equivalent on alpine glaciers

چکیده

Abstract. Monitoring the snow water equivalent (SWE) in harsh environments of high mountain regions is a challenge. Here, we explore use muon counts to infer SWE. We deployed muonic cosmic ray gauge (?-CRSG) on Swiss glacier during snow-rich winter season 2020/21 (almost 2000 mm w.e.). The ?-CRSG measurements agree well with by neutronic (n-CRSG), and they lie within uncertainty manual observations. conclude that highly promising method monitor SWE remote several advantages over n-CRSG.

Correlation and Prediction of Snow Water Equivalent from Snow Sensors

Since 1982, under an agreement between the California Department of Water Resources and the USDA Forest Service, snow sensors have been installed and operated in Forest Service-administered wilderness areas in the Sierra Nevada of California. The sensors are to be removed by 2005 because of the premise that sufficient data will have been collected to allow "correlation" and, by implication, pre...

However, sampling snow density is a difficult and time consuming task, which explains why few previous studies have analyzed the spatial variability of snow density. In this study we analyzed snow density measurements made in February...

Snow water equivalent estimation using blackbox optimization

Accurate measurements of snow water equivalent (SWE) is an important factor in managing water resources for hydroelectric power generation. SWE over a catchment area may be estimated via kriging on measures obtained by snow monitoring devices positioned at strategic locations. The question studied in this paper is to find the device locations that minimize the kriging interpolation error of the...

Inversion of a Snow Emission Model Calibrated With In Situ Data for Snow Water Equivalent Monitoring

Snow water equivalent (SWE) is critical information for hydrological studies over northern latitudes. This information is needed to adequately simulate spring runoff in order to optimize hydropower generation. In this paper, a new geophysical inversion methodology for monitoring SWE evolution on a daily basis is presented. The methodology is based on a modified version of the Helsinki Universit...

Is snow sublimation important in the alpine water balance?

In alpine terrain, snow sublimation represents an important component of the winter moisture budget, representing a proportion of precipitation which does not contribute to melt. To quantify its amount we analyze the spatial pattern of snow sublimation at the ground, from a canopy and from turbulent suspension during wind-induced snow transport for a high alpine area in the Berchtesgaden Nation...
